Thermally induced deformations in multi-layered polymeric struts

Submitted by noyco on

Stimulus activated structures that deform from a reference to target configurations are used in various fields such as soft robotics, smart materials, and actuators.  In this work we introduce a framework that captures the non-linear response of multi-layer polymeric beams subjected to thermo-mechanical loading. We show that the exploitation of the glass transition temperature can lead to a wide variety of interesting responses. Our findings provide guideline for an efficient design of shape-morphing structures capable of polymorphism.

International Journal on Obstetrics and Gynecology (IJOG)

Introduction: Gynecology is a field of study that deals with the Women’s Health, Female Reproductive System (Vagina, Uterus, Ovaries). Whereas Obstetrics mostly deals with Childbirth, Pregnancy and Postpartum Period. Generally, in medical specialty Gynecology and Obstetrics are combined.

Critical pressure of delamination of a film and a vessel

Submitted by ibiomechanic on

Following the approach of Griffith, Sneddon and Muskhelishvili calculated the pressure of tear propagation in elastic media. Gent and Lewandowski collected these works and using Hencky's approximation of membrane deformation, introduced a collection of relationships on the debonding of films from substrates by pressure (left panel).

Multi-Shape-Changing Interpenetrating Networks with Shape Memory and Adaptive Plasticity Transitions,

Submitted by zichen on

Shape-changing materials with precisely programmable configurations, each having its own functional regime, provide a wide range of applications in engineering and biomedical fields. Polymers with dynamic reversible covalent/non-covalent bonding feature the potential of having remarkable plasticity, which endows them with the capability of undergoing significant and sophisticated shape changes. Here we report a facile method to build an interpenetrating network (IPN) structure with plastic deformation and shape memory properties.
