Calculation of Compression Stresses for Open Cell Foams

Submitted by rezaalavi1000 on

I am investigating the effect of different structural properties on mechanical behavior of open-cell foams using compression tests. The structural properties that I have been considering are cell size, pore size, strut thickness as well as relative density. I am struggling on which surface area to consider for calculating the compression stress values, the "apparent" area which contains struts and pores (calculated by external dimensions of the specimens) or the "real" area which contains the struts only (and not pores).

On a systematic approach for cracked rotating shaft study: breathing mechanism, dynamics and instability

Submitted by saberelarem on

We present a systematic approach to deal with the modelling and analysis of the cracked rotating shafts behaviour. We begin by revisiting the problem of modelling the breathing mechanism of the crack.

Here we consider an original approach based on the form we give to the energy of the system and then identify the mechanism parameters using 3D computations with unilateral contact conditions on the crack lips.

Graduate research position - Modeling of composites (US Citizens only)

Submitted by Kmomeni on

A graduate position is opened in Advanced Hierarchical Materials by Design Lab at Louisiana Tech University on multiscale modeling of composites. The candidates must have earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields, and be a US Citizen. Candidates with a solid background in theoretical and computational mechanics, specifically continuum mechanics and finite element modeling are preferred. Familiarity with FEM software package COMSOL is a plus.

Symposium on Microstructure - Property Relationship in 3D Printed Metals

Submitted by Aman Haque on

The highly non-equilibrium and complex (thermal, mechanical, fluidics) processes in additive manufacturing lead to different microstructure and defect mechanics that is a major barrier for adaptation of this attractive manufacturing technique.
