A Doctorate of Engineering (DE) student position is available for Summer/Fall 2017 in Mechanical Engineering. It is highly prefered that the applicants are specialized in solid mechanics and well-familier with finite element methods. The positions involves multi-scale modeling of friction at high temperature and are directed by Multiscale Contact Mechanics and Tribology Laboratory at Lamar University, Beaumont, TX, USA.

Not too long ago, we identified dynamic recrystallization (DRX) as a potentially softening factor leading to the formation of adiabatic shear bands. However, the exact nature and the extent of the softening effect till remained to be assessed. The link to our new paper provides additional information on this issue.

The DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, University of California, Berkeley, seeks applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in the areas of Design, Robotics, Applied Energy Systems, and Nanoscale Systems Engineering.

A fully funded PhD scholarship exists in the area of Mechanics of Materials, endowed in honour of Prof M F Ashby.  The successful applicant will have a 1st class degree (and ideally a Masters degree) in an appropriate field.  The precise topic of the PhD can be fixed after the scholarship has been awarded.

Eukaryotic cells exhibit considerable variability in their responses in terms of observables such as cell shape, cell area, cytoskeletal protein arrangements etc. This variability/fluctuation is inherent to the bio-chemical processes occurring within cells: in-fact cells use these fluctuations to detect and respond to their environment. However, these fluctuations have largely been neglected in most modelling approaches with attention restricted to deterministic models.

Professor GQ Zhang's research group has an immediate post-doc position at Delft University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands. The position will be effective from January 2017 for at least two year period of contract. The applicant must have a PhD degree in engineering or science field with a strong record of publications in archived journals. The related research areas involve with micro-/nano- heterogeneous systems integration, reliability and manufacturing, and new material development.

Candidates must have a strong background in mathematical optimization, finite element method and computer programming, and be committed to applying rigorous mathematical tools to structural design and optimization. Experience or interest in developing numerical methods and/or large-scale high performance computing and collaborative software development is also desirable.

The position is part of the project “Electro-plastic deformation of Al-Cu eutectic alloys” within the priority programme “Manipulation of Matter Controlled by Electric and Magnetic Fields: Towards Novel Synthesis and Processing Routes of Inorganic Materials” (SPP 1959).
