This symposium will focus on the computational modeling of soft materials and their interactions with biological entities for application in medicine. We are particularly interested in materials that can be functionalized to react to external stimuli and/or change their mechanical and chemical properties substantially at room temperature, including, for instance, hydrogels, liquid crystals, un-crosslinked or weakly crosslinked polymers, granular materials, foams, lipid mono/bi-layers as well as soft biological materials (e.g., blood, extracellular matrices, cytoskeleton, biomembranes).

Abstract:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of SES, we are soliciting nominations to fill 2 positions in the SES Board of Directors. The SES members will elect the directors from the nominees. The Board plays an important role in defining the vision of SES, organizing various SES events, managing society finances, and evaluating nominations for the SES awards. In this paper, a simplified analytic model for the dynamic behaviour of railway catenary wire is presented. The model is discussed and validated with the help of numerical results obtained by a finite element code, for the case of a typical Italian railway installation. The simplified model is convenient from the computational point of view and is useful for sensitivity analysis. Some parametric studies have been developed by considering as free parameters the velocity and the distance of the train pantographs and looking at their effect on catenary dynamics.

The Journal of Applied Mechanics Award is provided by the Applied Mechanics Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to honor the best paper which has been published in the Journal of Applied Mechanics during the two calendar years immediately preceding the year of the award. The award will be made annually to the corresponding author of the paper who received their Ph.D. no more than 10 years prior to July 1 of the year of award.  Corresponding authors who have yet to receive a Ph.D. may also be considered.

We present an innovative image-based modeling technique, based on Google Earth like algorithms, to effectively resolve intricate material morphology and address the computational complexity associated with heterogeneous materials. This sharp volumetric billboard algorithm stems from a volumetric billboard method, a multi-resolution modeling strategy in computer graphics. In this work, we enhance volumetric billboards through a sharpening filter to reconstruct the statistical information of heterogeneous systems.
