Submitted by Jie. Yin on

Applications are invited for an immediate postdoctoral associate opening and one Ph.D. opening (Spring, 2018) in mechanics and design of mechanical metamaterials and soft robotics in the Applied Mechanics of Materials Lab of Mechanical Engineering Department at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, US.

Postdoctoral research in topology and fiber composite optimization at UC San Diego

Submitted by alicia on

Applications are sought for a Post-Doctoral Researcher at University of California, San Diego (USA) to join the M2DO research lab. The primary research focus is to develop topology optimization for fiber composite material. In particular the research will develop an optimization method for structural topology as well as fiber composite architecture making essential use of the finite element method for structural mechanics. The position is initially for one year with a possibility for renewal.

How are principal planes & eigen vectors of the stress tensor related ? | An intuitive explanation

Submitted by rajan_prithivi on

To obtain the principal planes we construct the stress tensor and find the eigen vectors. Here is an attempt to explain it more intuitively rather than the use of the formal mathematical method. Hope you enjoy this video!

This is an educational outreach initiative targeted at all engineers interested in mechanics and seek simpler explanations. Kindly share if you learn something out of this !

Generalized stacking fault energies, ductilities, and twinnabilities of CoCrFeNi-based face-centered cubic high entropy alloys

Submitted by mohsenzaeem on

Effects of Cu, Mn, Al, Ti, Mo on generalized stacking fault energies, Rice-criterion ductilities, and twinabilities of CoCrFeNi-based face-centered cubic high entropy alloys were investigated using density functional theory calculations. The calculated barrier energies and twinnabilities revealed that the addition of Ti or Mo increased the tendency of dislocation glide and deformation twinning, while addition of Mn, Cu and relatively high amount of Al facilitated dislocation gliding and martensitic transformation. Low amount of Al resulted in only dislocation gliding.
