Remeshing when using Abaqus

Submitted by RenegadeMaster on

Hi

I am modelling a contact problem using Abaqus and I am trying to use remeshing hoping to get more accurate results in critical locations. But I encounter following error:" the area of 7 elements is zero, small or negative". Despite of the definitions of the remeshing rules always the error message appears when size of elements  is quite a small. My goal is to get minimum element size 1E-7m in critical location. The error message appears much before that goal. I am very grateful if someone could help.

Looking for a PhD student

Submitted by Carl Frick on

A Ph.D. position has recently become available in my research group (www.eng.uwyo.edu/mechanical/research/frick/), to explore thermo-mechanical
behavior of shape memory polymers for biomedical applications.  A
strong candidate with a M.S. or B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering,
Materials Science, or a related discipline is required.  A good
academic record, a clear interest in experimental sciences, and an
enthusiasm to conduct outstanding research are the only prerequisites.

dynamic crack propagation

Submitted by llguang on

Hello everyone, I am useing the CZM method researching the dynamic crack propation problem in composites,so I must have the UEL OR VUEL of cohesive zone elements in ABAQUS or other FEM software,at this moment,  i have a UEL of ABAQUS,so i have a question ,if i want to simulate the dynamic crack problem, can i use the UEL? Or must write my VUEL?

Everyone answer is welcome

If some people have the same researching plan ,we can communicate each other!

For metals, when will the elastic modulus be changed?

Submitted by flong208 on

I have a question, for the same metal material, when will the elastic modulus will be changed? in another words, in what kind of processing or machine condition will the elastic modulus be changed? for example, to machine elements(gear, bearing ...), when the part surface is case hardened, will the elastic modulus be changed? if not, how can the difference of hardness between case hardened surface and without hardened substrate be reflected in FEM analysis? how can the case hardened surface parameters affect the contact stress when two part are brought to contact?

Structures in fire

Submitted by Emmanuel E. Ufuah on

Hi,

Are there researchers working on specific areas in offshore structures? Or is anyone covering the material behaviour of structures at elevated temperatures? I am indeed challenged to read about excitng contributions from different scholars expecially in structural mechanics. I realise I have just begun a race in research. You could help me gain the proper direction in research.

I shall be glad to get any response.

problems in using traction-separation laws supplied by Abaqus

Abaqus supplies cohesive elements and several traction-separation laws
which can be used to study crack problems. In studying a mode I crack
problem (see Fig.1), the cohesive interfaces in front of the crack tips
(both sides) are represented by cohesive elements. The size of the bulk
material is taken as 6x6 mum and the size of cohesive elements is 2x2
nm (or 10x10 nm). The constitutive response in the cohesive element is
described by a triangle-type traction-separation law, where  maximum
stress or displacement is chosen as the failure criterion of the
